Why visit
Imagine you’re on a journey with grand castles rising stoically above a river, vineyard-covered hills rolling by in the distance, and historic cities unfolding along flowing water. That’s exactly what you’ll experience on a Budapest to Amsterdam cruise.
The Danube River is remarkable as the world’s most international river. It gracefully flows through or along 10 European countries, including Austria. There, the Main-Danube Canal connects it to the Main River and, ultimately, the Rhine for the onward voyage to the Netherlands. A Danube-Rhine cruise features ever-changing scenery and some of Europe’s most memorable landscapes and landmarks.
The Danube to Rhine route has a lot to offer, as the waterways unfold across Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands. You’ll set eyes on open stretches of countryside between quiet riverside towns and lively world-renowned capitals.
The journey starts in Budapest and follows the Danube towards Bratislava and Vienna. The Wachau scenery, adorned with spectacular vineyards, spices the trip before the welcoming views of the Rhine in Germany. On the final stretch, the route passes the Rhine Gorge and Cologne before arriving at your destination in Amsterdam.
There is much to see on this castle and storybook cities cruise. Of course, there are plenty of castles and royal architecture in the historic cities. From your cruise ship base, the medieval streets invite you to take a closer look.
The Danube sets the stage for an exciting start. You’ll enjoy new sites and scenery at every bend of the river. Some of the sights to expect at the various stops include:
Since the journey starts in Budapest, one of the first sites you’ll see is the Castle District, high above the Danube. At this stop, you can wander cobblestone streets and explore historic architecture and landmark buildings. From the high vantage point, you can view the river, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, and both Buda and Pest as each half of Budapest spreads out in splendor.
Still along the Danube, Bratislava presents a change in scenery. Its Old Town features narrow streets that open to charming squares and colorful facades. You can explore the architecture if you’re a history lover or hop into a café to sample snacks and light dishes.
Further down the river, Vienna swoops in with a healthy dose of imperial grandeur. In the heart of the city is Ringstrasse, home to numerous imposing buildings and landmarks that any heritage enthusiast would delight in. However, the Hofburg Palace may be one of the most memorable stops as you continue from Vienna to Amsterdam.
At Wachau Valley, you’ll encounter one of the most picturesque stretches of the European river cruise route. Along with vineyards, wooded hills, villages, and a winding Danube, Melk Abbey adds character to the mix. Its fascinating High Baroque architecture overlooks the town of Melk and the river.
As you enter Germany, the scenery changes but remains exciting. There are more old towns and cliffs, and the river becomes their backdrop. On this stretch of the voyage, some of the sights to look forward to include:
Passau marks the start of the German stretch of the journey. It’s also where the Danube meets the Inn and the Ilz rivers. These three waterways, which wrap around the historic center, give Passau the name “Three Rivers City” (Dreiflüssestadt). It’s an excellent opportunity to snap photos of the three rivers converging. If you fancy a walk, the old town streets will welcome you with open arms.
The next highlight of the Danube Rhine cruise appears along the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, also known as the Middle Rhine Gorge. Steep hills rise from the waters, and medieval villages are calmly tucked along the river banks. Then the Rhine Castles come into view, immersed in fairytale scenery. As you proceed downstream, the Lorelei Rock emerges. It’s a towering cliff associated with one of the Rhine’s best-known legends.
The Cologne Cathedral beautifully interrupts the countryside’s iconic cruise scenery with its Gothic towers dominating the city’s skyline. It has become a defining landmark of Cologne. Give your trip a religious dimension here before you move on to the Netherlands.
As the journey comes to a satisfying end, Amsterdam gives it more character. The city welcomes travelers with quiet canals and rows of historic buildings reflected in the water. In the city, the vibes take an energy-filled turn as cafes and restaurants open doors to those keen on exploring new flavors. The nightlife is also lively, whether you want to chill at a cozy pub or enjoy a late-night dinner in the city. It’s truly a befitting stop for the journey – from Danube capitals and abbeys to Rhine scenery and Amsterdam canals.
The Budapest to Amsterdam cruise showcases Europe’s most distinctive places, from the grand streets of Budapest and Vienna to the castles and sweeping Rhine scenery.
