History of the Porcelain Village
Ci Qi Kou Ancient Town presents more than 1,700 years of history. It was once known as Long Yin before it became synonymous with porcelain production. After the Ming dynasty, its name changed to Ci Qi Kou during the Qing dynasty, which directly translates to “Porcelain Village.” It’s a nod to the material that made it a heritage craft district.
But Ci Qi Kou’s history isn’t only made up of porcelain and craft. Its position along the river is equally important. It became a useful destination for shipping and supplies, with numerous traders and travelers stopping in the town. Today, nearly two millennia later, tourists can still enjoy the streets and river that gave the town life.
What to See on the Old Streets
A great way to enjoy what Ci Qi Kou has to offer is to wander. The town features twelve historic lanes paved with wide flagstones. They wind between traditional buildings and craft studios. Every corner brings something new to discover, from little shops to street-side snacks.
There are over twenty uncovered kiln sites, and you’ll come across them as you pace the old Chongqing streets. During your stroll, keep an eye out for artists at work and local Shu Embroidery workshops, where a centuries-old Chinese craft is still practiced by hand.
Food, Tea Houses, and Local Crafts
One of the elements that makes it possible to wander around Ci Qi Kou without a plan is its over 100 traditional teahouses. They are conveniently scattered throughout the town, inviting you to sit down and sip slowly as local life unfolds around you. Neighbors meet here, and you might catch a live opera.
As you explore, don’t forget to follow the aroma of roasted nuts and seeds. These make an easy snack as you look for a restaurant or a food stall. Use your Ci Qi Kou guide to make it easier to tour local craft shops and pick up handmade souvenirs that make the journey more memorable.
Visiting From Chongqing
Since Ci Qi Kou sits just 9 miles (14 km) west of Chongqing, it’s a natural stop if you wish to step away from the city. Your Chongqing ancient town guide wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this historic corner of the city. Take a walk along the old lanes while browsing traditional crafts. Occasionally, settle in a tea house for a refreshing beverage or a light snack.
If you’re after a quiet experience, consider visiting Ci Qi Kou on a weekday, especially in the morning. The old streets will be less crowded than on weekends and holidays. Set aside two to three hours to wander the lanes, browse the crafts, and sample a few local treats.
Ci Qi Kou is also a lovely addition to your Yangtze River itinerary. It gives you a chance to experience a slower, more traditional side of the region.
